# What is tongue cancer?

There are 2 parts of tongue, the base of tongue and the oral tongue. In any part tongue cancer can develop. When you poke out your tongue, the part that you can see is called oral tongue. This is 2/3 of your front tongue. In this tongue’s part, cancer can develop and usually called oral or mouth cancer. The tongue’s base is the back 1/3 of tongue. This part of the tongue is close to the pharynx or throat. In this part cancer can develop and usually called oropharyngeal cancers.

# Tongue cancer types

SCCA (Squamous Cell Carcoma) is the most common of tongue cancer types. The cells of squamous are flat and skin-like which cover nose, the mouth’s lining, larynx, throat and thyroid. To a cancer that starts in these cell, we give a name Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

# Tongue cancer symptoms

The tongue cancer symptoms are:

- On the tongue, there are a white or red patch and a sore spot that won’t go away.

- On the throat, there is a sore that won’t go away

- When swallowing you feel pain

- On the mouth, there is a numbness that won’t go away

- From the tongue, there is unexplained bleeding that not caused by injury or bite your tongue.

- There is pain in the ear. This pain happened rarely.

Remember that these symptoms of tongue cancer could be due to a less dangerous medical condition. Just to make sure, checking the symptoms of tongue cancer with your GP is important.

# Tongue cancer causes and risks

The exact causes of most neck and head cancers we do not know but we have identified several risk factors. In the western world, the main risk factors for neck and head cancers are drinking too much alcohol and smoking cigarettes or tobacco.

# How to treat the tongue cancer?

For many cancer types, diagnose the cancer early will make control the cancer easier and possibly cure the cancer. Tongue cancer treatments depend on the cancer already spread or not to the lymph nodes in the neck and depend on the tongue cancer size. For the tongue cancer treatments you may have:

- Radiotherapy

- Surgery

- Chemotherapy

You could have one of this tongue cancer treatment or combination of this treatment. Surgery is the best treatment for the very small tongue cancer.

Mostly you will take a combination of radiotherapy and surgery for larger tongue cancer tumors that already spread to the lymph nodes in neck. It’s mean doing the operation to remove tongue cancer from the lymph nodes in the neck and from the tongue. All the nodes on both or one sides of your neck will be removed. This operation is called by the doctor,a radical neck dissection. The operation will minimize the risk of the coming back of your tongue cancer. Then you will have a radiotherapy course to free any cells of cancer left behind.

You will have an operation to remove your tongue if your tongue cancer has grown so large that it affects almost all of your tongue Because of this is a big operation, your doctor will suggest you to try chemotherapy and radiotherapy to shrink the tongue cancer. If chemotherapy and radiotherapy work, you won’t need major surgery.

Your ability to swallow and speak will change permanently if you do the operation. The way of your look will also affected by the operation.

This is very difficult to face it and you will need a lot of help and support to do your daily activation.

Before the operation, it’s important for you to talk to the doctor and ask all the questions about how the operation will affect your appearance, your speech, your drinking and eating.

# Side effect of tongue cancer treatment

Every treatments of tongue cancer have side effects. Some of the side effects are permanent but some may be temporary. The problems that will occur due to surgery to the tongue are your appearance will change and problems to your drinking, speech and eating. Radiotherapy to the neck and head area can cause some side effects such as sore mouth, dry mouth and taste changes.
